BANQUET SPEAKER
Dave Hedditch has done a great job arranging for a guest speaker for the banquet, Galen L Hanselman. Mr. Hanselman has written a number of pilot guide books, including, "Fly the Big Sky" and "Air Baja!" which can be previewed at his web site: www.flyidaho.com. Here is a brief biography, and by all appreances, it looks like we are in for a real treat.

Bio
"My long time friend and boyhood shooting instructor, USMC Retired Captain Ben Hurtig, introduced me to aviation in the mid 70s. One day Ben brought a broken headset in for me repair and when I soldered the plug back on, we went down to his hangar to try it out. Ben had a 1950s vintage Super Cub. I’d never been in a small plane before and after plugging in the headset we had to go for a flight to try it out.

The rest is history. I went on to get my private pilot certificate in 1980 and have written four aviation books on backcountry flying destinations, drawn a half dozen aeronautical charts and written articles for several publications and newsletters.

I’ve landed on every backcountry airstrip in Idaho, Montana, Utah and Baja, Mexico … many that had never been documented or charted. I’ve measured them, surveyed them, photographed them, charted them, researched them and written about them. I never found an airstrip I didn’t like, although a couple fell into the “you’re pushing your luck category.”

In Baja, I was detained 37 times by the military, the police, the Federales and just about everyone else who had a gun. In Utah, the Ute Indians attempted to confiscate my friend’s Cub while we were surveying. And through the years I’ve managed to pile up a couple airplanes … duct tape held one of them together long enough to fly it out of Buffalo Hump, Idaho but the other had to be helicoptered out in pieces (very small pieces) from Dark Canyon, Utah.

Through it all, though, I wouldn’t have changed a thing (well, maybe a couple of things). My joy is in sharing the information I’ve gathered, good and bad, about these marvelous airstrips and preserving them for others to enjoy."

TRIPS
Buses are scheduled to the Golden Spike National Historic Site.
Vans will be available daily to make runs to the Hill Air Force Base Museum where you can spend several hours going through the exhibits. Historic "25th Street" with plenty of dining options, antique shops and boutiques are right behind the hotel and easy walking.

Out the front door and within easy walking distance is the "Ogden Junction" with lots of fun things to do. FatCats (bumper cars, bowling, ect.), I Fly (indoor skydiving for all ages), Flow Rider (indoor surfing), MegaPlex movie theater with inside dining, also numerous dining options, too many to list.

At the end of "25th Street" is Union Station, inside is an art gallery, a gift shop, the John M.Browning Firearms Museum a must see, Utah State Railroad Museum and the Browning-Kimball Classic Car museum and if you still have time, you can take the Street Car Shuttle (free) for a sight-seeing trip around Ogden or take the FrontRunner Train to Salt Lake City.

At the airport, we have "The Auger Inn" restaurant (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in the old terminal building open seven days a week, on the South end of the airport, we have an FBO, "Rickenbackers" Steak House (upstairs that overlooks the airport and runways) and the Doolittle Deli all in the Ogden Gateway building.

POKER RUN
Poker Run Satellite
Another spectacular poker run is being planned for 2012 that will take you over/to three of Utah's most famous attractions - the Great Salt Lake, the Bonneville Salt Flats, and historic Wendover Airfield (ENV).
Historic Wendover Airfield is the place where the crew of the B-29 Enola Gay trained in preparation for dropping the atomic bomb that ended WW II. There is a Museum there.
Pilots can choose to fly a direct route southwest from Ogden over the Great Salt Lake using flight following while avoiding Class B airspace, or take a route that stays closer to land and more closely follows I-80 to Wendover.
After crossing the Great Salt Lake and the Lakseside Mountains, you will traverse the Bonneville Salt Flats. Gilbert Pierce reports: "When Barbara and I entered the flats at about 2000' agl, the 'WOW' factor was really high. It was an awesome trip!"

By the way, Wendover is on Utah's western border with Nevada, so for those who want to get a log book entry for Nevada, Wells Muni/Harriet Field (KLWL) is only 47nm (30 minutes) northwest from Wendover (this is at pilot's discretion, not part of the poker run).
